So many homeowners have porches, decks or patios that add value to their homes. In the absence of an outdoor living space, I encourage homeowners to create an area that showcases their yard. Here’s an easy, low cost solution for creating an outdoor space.

I took a neglected section of my own yard and created a picnic area with a July 4th theme. I cleared the debris, pulled the weeds and trimmed the low, dead branches on the pine trees. Then, I power washed the picnic table that had not been used in years. Though it could use some stain or paint, I left it with a weathered look that seems appropriate for the woodsy area.

The biggest purchase was three strings of party lights that were draped across the tree branches. Most of the table setting is from things I already owned. I bought holiday themed candles and red and blue ribbon with white stars on sale at Michaels. I arranged the candles on a clear glass cake stand and added curled ribbon to create a simple centerpiece. From Wegmans, I purchased three inexpensive flowerpots – one red, one white, and one blue. I repurposed the pots to hold flatware, napkins, and holiday themed lollipops. To finish off the surrounding area, I added three potted flowers in varying heights.

Whether staging your yard in preparation for the sale of your home or just adding another area of interest to your existing outdoor space, you can have fun creating simple outdoor spaces.
