The fall season is officially upon us despite the warmer temperatures that make it feel like summer in October. If your home is on the market, take advantage of the colors of the season and make your home stand out. Here are five tips for changing up your home decor.
1. Curb Appeal
It is always the number one priority when selling your home, no matter the season. Continue to maintain the lawn, pull out the annuals, remove the perennials, fluff or replenish the mulch and rake the leaves. Keep seasonal outdoor decorations to a minimum by choosing a few items that take their cues from nature rather than commercial holiday themes. Think pumpkins instead of ghosts and potted mums instead of scarecrows.
2. Bring The Outdoors In
If the autumn colors coordinate with your décor, bring that color theme indoors with accent pieces, table arrangements, pillows and throws. If the colors of pumpkins and fall leaves just don’t work, use other seasonal items. Bowls of pinecones, vases filled with pussy willows and baskets filled with seasonal vegetables such as eggplant, artichokes, cauliflower and brussels sprouts make great alternatives.
3. Keep Your Home Well Lit
With shorter daylight hours, be sure to have multiple sources of light in each room. Aim for three sources and use table and floor lamps, which are better for creating mood lighting. Choose warm light bulbs over cool bright light.
4. Create Cozy Spaces
Focus on warmth and comfort for fall showings. Use heavily textured pillows and throw covers generously. If you have a fireplace, play it up. Birch logs are a perfect touch. If it is a really cool day turn up the thermostat to a comfortable temperature.
5. Change Your Listing Photos
If your home has been on the market prior to the fall season be sure to change some of the photos, especially those that show the outdoors. Nothing says my house won’t sell like a photo from another season.
