I arrived back in the USA with fond memories that will last a lifetime! We started the trip with the simple pleasures of life in Racalmuto, Sicily. I caught up with family news and marveled at the growth of the youngest generation. The homemade meals were made from the freshest of locally grown ingredients. The narrow stone streets are lined with tiny specialty shops for meat, fish, produce and baked goods. One of my favorite things was the nightly “passeggiata” (walking up and down the main streets socializing and people watching).

By car, we traveled through Caltanissetta, Enna, and Catania on our way to Taormina. With its magnificent beaches, designer shops, fine linens, artwork, jewelry and countless hotels and restaurants, it is easy to see why Taormina is Sicily’s most popular destination.

Taromina’s highlight’s included a visit to the Greek Theatre built in the 7th century BC which is still used for operas, theatre and concerts. We took the Castelmola (castle) Walk with its breathtaking views from 2000 feet above sea level. The first of the Greek fortresses was built on the very top of the mountain. Though all of the food was excellent, the Michelin 3 star restaurant at San Domenico Palace Hotel (a converted 15th century monastery) was beyond compare.

Our last stop was by air to Brendizi, Italy where I visited with a dear friend that I met right here in Rochester. She is the epitome of Italian hospitality. We stayed in her beautiful home where the domed, hand painted ceilings of over 200 years still remain. The sightseeing, shopping and art museums ranked as high as the delicious regional food.

With wonderful experiences and fresh ideas, I’m back to staging and decorating!
