I’m Kristin, Leona’s Media Manager and I’ve got a DIY project to share with you that I created as holiday gifts this year.
When it comes time to recycle the wine bottles I’ve recently enjoyed, I always feel like there’s something else I could be doing with these bottles instead of just putting them in the blue bin. After seeing a DIY project that used painted wine bottles as centerpieces at a wedding with the phrase “Eat Drink and Be Married”, I thought what a great idea!
Here’s the process I went through to make these pretty, decorative, upcycled vases:
- Soak the wine bottles in warm, soapy water until the labels come off easily (about 15 minutes).
- I like to make sure there is no residue of wine in the bottle so I ran the bottles through the dishwasher for a thorough clean.
- My husband set up a paint booth in the basement that makes it very easy to spray paint the bottles all in one shot. I used a black matte spray paint that is good for glass and other surfaces. This one also has a 2-in-1 primer built in so it covers very well.
- I did a light coat of paint the first round just to get it covered, trying to prevent runs in the paint. After letting it dry about 2 hours, I added another light coat over the whole bottle. The key here is spray lightly. Otherwise too much paint will cause runs that are not fixable.
- The labels were created on the computer and printed by a local printer using a vinyl laser printer that die cuts around the lettering for a transparent look.
- Add a stem embellishment and you have a fun, festive vase that can be used year round just by changing out the filler.
