I’m Kristin, Leona’s Media Manager and I’ve got a DIY project to share with you that I created as holiday gifts this year.

When it comes time to recycle the wine bottles I’ve recently enjoyed, I always feel like there’s something else I could be doing with these bottles instead of just putting them in the blue bin. After seeing a DIY project that used painted wine bottles as centerpieces at a wedding with the phrase “Eat Drink and Be Married”, I thought what a great idea!

Here’s the process I went through to make these pretty, decorative, upcycled vases:

  1. Soak the wine bottles in warm, soapy water until the labels come off easily (about 15 minutes).
  2. I like to make sure there is no residue of wine in the bottle so I ran the bottles through the dishwasher for a thorough clean.
  3. My husband set up a paint booth in the basement that makes it very easy to spray paint the bottles all in one shot. I used a black matte spray paint that is good for glass and other surfaces. This one also has a 2-in-1 primer built in so it covers very well.
  4. I did a light coat of paint the first round just to get it covered, trying to prevent runs in the paint. After letting it dry about 2 hours, I added another light coat over the whole bottle. The key here is spray lightly. Otherwise too much paint will cause runs that are not fixable.
  5. The labels were created on the computer and printed by a local printer using a vinyl laser printer that die cuts around the lettering for a transparent look.
  6. Add a stem embellishment and you have a fun, festive vase that can be used year round just by changing out the filler.
