Mike Fitzsimmons is a self-taught metal artist who found his appreciation for metalworking while attending Morrisville State College. Enrolled in an automotive body program, Mike excelled in the metal working disciplines. The artwork Mike produces comes from a love for the outdoors. It encompasses the shapes, textures and colors found in nature. The use of flowing designs enhanced by specialized coloring techniques and fine finishing is the hallmark of Fitz Arts.
In the summer of 2009, Leona was looking for just the right artwork to complete the decorating of Jeff Henchen’s Landmark Builders home for Homearama. Jeff mentioned that he had seen a metal sculpture at the Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua that he really liked. With a little bit of research, Leona was able to find the artist. She contacted Mike and he was eager to have his pieces showcased. The house won first place for best decorated.
The working relationship and friendship between Leona and Mike continues to grow. Leona finds just the right place to plant Mike’s trees in some of her client’s homes.
Mike Fitzsimmons is one of the 12 local artists being shown at JGK Galleries through the end of February. Here’s a short video to find out more about Mike and his process of creating metal trees.
